Newlands boasts one of the largest cruise ship fleets on Earth. In 2022, it consists of 27 ships of various age and gross tonnage.

Without any doubt, fishing was the branch of Newlands economy which developed first and was for a long time one of the main drivers of progress, not to mention the main source of food for archipelago’s growing population.

By 1960 Newlands had its first container ship.
